Did you know that anaemia affects thousands of people around the globe? And astonishingly most aren't even aware that they are afflicted till symptoms become overwhelming! Our body is made of White Blood Cells (WBC) and Red Blood Cells (RBC) and anaemia is described as a decrease in the RBC mass. Experts say that red cells carry an oxygen-carrying molecule, known as haemoglobin, and a decreased number of red cells means a low amount of haemoglobin available. This results in lesser oxygen being carried by the red blood cells to various body parts for essential nutrition.
Iron-deficiency anaemia is among the most common form of malnutrition. Anaemia can cause a feeling of sluggishness and constant fatigue. The most common cause is nutritional deficiency of iron due to loss of blood, stomach or intestinal ulcers or excess menstrual loss. More prevelant among women than men, anemia in some cases makes your heart work harder, which can even give rise to heart disease. If you complain of feeling lethargic, breathlessness, headaches, dizziness or slight palpitations, you need to get yourself tested. Treatment generally includes a well balanced diet, with lots of vegetables and fruits.
