Germs and bacteria's
are present in every nook and corner of the world. Some are good for
your health while others can ruin your wellbeing for good.
These harmful bacteria's can be very bothersome as it can make you bed
ridden while also making a hole in your pocket in the process. We often
fail to recognize the importance of the good bacteria
and the benefits they offer due to lack of knowledge or prior
assumptions. Due to our lack of proper information, we often protect
ourselves receiving the health perks that these friendly bacteria's
present. These unnecessary assumptions about viruses and bacteria's have
certainly erupted from myths, which have been passed from ages. Today,
Dr. K.M. Sunesara - General Physician, Mumbai, will help us to debunk
the top 10 common myths about bacteria's and their relationship with
cold and flu.
Myths about Virus and Bacteria # 1: I am too healthy, so I don't need a vaccine
As long as a vaccine is given under a doctor's knowledge, it is to be
considered safe and effective - says Dr. Sunesara. Vaccines don't harm
our immune system. In fact, they work with our immune system and help us
face the war against the infections. Hence, however healthy you
consider yourself, if you doctor asks you to take a shot then go for it,
to protect against many infections.
Myths about Virus and Bacteria # 2: Once I am fine, I don't need to take antibiotics
Follow the course of your antibiotics, up untill your doctor has
suggested - says Dr. Sunesara. Once you feel better, it doesn't mean
that's you stop taking your medicines. At times, some doses are too
strong and they can make you fit and fine in an instant. Never
misunderstand these quick fixations as an instant recovery; your body is
still weak and it still needs care and attention.
Myths about Virus and Bacteria # 3: Flu is a chilled-out affair
Chuck
this thought from the mind right away. An act from any virus is really a
bad thing. Even if the symptoms are minor and aren't causing much
trouble, you need to take care of your health to prevent major
complications. A minor flu can be devastating and can even cause death.
Myths about Virus and Bacteria # 4: A flu shot is flu-proof for lifetime
We assume that once we have taken the vaccination, we have an insurance
against flu up untill death. It is not true. Flu viruses change every
year and most of the times the previous vaccination that you had, won't
work against the new virus. Hence, get a vaccination each year to fight
against new flu viruses.
Myths about Virus and Bacteria # 5: Viruses are resistant to cleanliness
We tend to ask 'how does washing hands protect us from various flu
viruses?' The truth is, washing your hands thoroughly and maintaining
good hygiene
lowers your risk of acquiring flu. Though flu viruses are resistant and
can make infections difficult to treat, they are vulnerable to
cleanliness and good hygiene.
Myths about Virus and Bacteria # 6: I don't have to worry if my fever isn't too high
Whether your fever is low or high, the most important point is that 'a
fever is a fever' says - Dr. Sunesara. If you feel even a little
feverish, it means your immune system is fighting against an infection.
Never take a mild temperature for granted, because a mild fever can mean
the commencement of a huge health problem like typhoid or pneumonia.
Meet a doctor immediately to avoid major complications.
Myths about Virus and Bacteria # 7: Organic food will keep me germ-free
If you into eating organic food, then don't assume that you are
automatically germ-free. Dr. Sunesara says - organic fruits and
vegetables also have a huge chance of developing bacteria and
infections. Hence, all fruits and vegetables are equally harmful when
eaten unwashed or prior to cleaning thoroughly.
Myths about Virus and Bacteria # 8: Pets can be a germ carrier as well
Your household pet isn't immune to infectious disease. They can carry
various bacteria's, viruses and parasites that can make you really sick.
To avoid getting ill due to your pet, ensure that your pet is regularly
bathed, cleaned with regular check-ups. Always wash your hands after
playing with them and before eating your meal.
Myths about Virus and Bacteria # 9: All bacteria's are bad
No! This myth is absolutely wrong. There are few which can have adverse
effect health but there few which are needed for the proper functioning
of the organs. Hence, don't ignore all bacteria's and dont treat them
the same.
Myths about Virus and Bacteria # 10: If you catch flu, you won't get it again during flu season
Many think that if you've had flu recently then you won't get it soon
again. This is completely false. Dr Sunesara says, "Flu can happen due
to both Type A and Type B influenza.
So, if you recently caught flu with one type, then in the near future
you may catch flu of the other type. To avoid such a situation, take the
necessary vaccines on time or else you will end up spending more time
in your bed"
